OUR STORY
More than 100 children are sexually abused every day in India. While this number might seem alarming, child sexual abuse is highly underreported due to a lack of awareness among children and their parents along with the taboos attached to it. Most of the abusers are known to the child victims, which makes it difficult for the child and his family to report these crimes. Even if children and their parents are aware of the various forms of sexual abuse, they are unaware of the redressal mechanisms provided under the Indian Legal System. When parents gather the courage to file a complaint, they are often met with harassment at the hands of the police officers. Through Paavi, we aim at employing interventions at the grassroots by creating awareness among children, mothers, and teachers about:
* Various forms of Child Sexual Abuse and how to identify them
* Immediate response to abuse
* How to file a complaint
* Redressal mechanisms at and beyond police stations
Through our workshops, we also sensitize them about the existing power disparity in our society and how that leads to the commission of crimes against the oppressed sections.
We use this platform to initiate a dialogue on equality by breaking down the gender stereotypes and empower children for speaking up against abuse and increase the reporting of such incidents.

Kanika joined Katha as a legal consultant and helped us curate and execute workshops for children and women. The workshops were tailored to make them relevant for our beneficiaries and suit their needs. They were fun and engaging and encouraged the audience to ask questions and learn about legal rights and concepts in easy to understand terms. The sessions with children were kept simple and vibrant but helped them learn pertinent concepts through a unique approach. From Kanika’s experiences and learnings from the workshop, she successfully helped curate a special story series for children and women to help them learn about child safety and redressal mechanisms in India. We value Kanika’s technical expertise tremendously.
